Ep. 87 - 3 Summer Organizing Tips

Doesn’t it feel like we just put away the Christmas tree?! But here we are, with summer knocking at our door. A different season calls for different organizational strategies, and today I’m giving you three tips to help you get ready.

1. Organize the Tangible clutter

External clutter creates internal clutter, so our first priority is preparing our spaces.

  • Organize the kids’ closets (and even yours!) – Time to rotate the winter stuff out, bring the summer stuff in, and discard old clothes we don’t wear anymore.
  • Organize the gear – Whether it’s the swim diapers and sunscreen in the swim bag, a case of bottled water and mosquito repellant and snacks in the trunk of the car, or bubbles and sidewalk chalk in the backyard, organize the gear you’ll be using most.
  • Organize the backpacks – You know when the kids come home from the last day of school, and they are carrying a box holding all the contents of their desk? And their backpacks are stuffed full? Go through it now. We don’t want this haunting us all summer long!

2. Organize the schedule

Yes, we are all ready for a break from the rigorous school routines…but fun stops being fun when there is no rhyme nor reason to the summer days. Create a flexible summer routine starting with breakfast. Then follow up with some after breakfast tasks, like getting dressed and doing a few chores. They won’t realize it, but you’ve subtly implemented a light and flexible summer routine that will turn your days right side up and give you a little predictability.

3. Organize your mindset

Transition in and out of the school year can be tricky – but if we think of it as a pit stop on a road trip, it can give us the peace of mind that we will soon be back in the groove. Every road trip includes the inevitable breaks to refuel or take someone to the bathroom, and the first few weeks of summer can feel like that pit stop, as you are addressing a lot of needs and trying to figure out a new routine. But the road trip metaphor reminds us that transition is brief and we will settle into a new normal soon.

Need a little more support? Join us for Organize Your Summer Live June 2-5, where we will meet each morning in a short zoom call, listen to a 10-15 minute organizing training each day, and meet in a private Facebook group for our “pit stop,” to borrow a term from the road trip metaphor. You’ll be back on the onramp and accelerating back to a new normal, where summer is fun AND you’ll know how to get the important things done.
