Ep. 79 - When You Need to Take a Break

You know that feeling when you’re completely drained, when motivation seems impossible to find? I get it – we all do. In this episode, I’m opening up about my own journey with burnout and why I’ve decided to take a short break from creating new podcast content. But don’t worry – this episode is all about helping YOU recognize when you might need a breather too.

I’m excited to walk you through what I call the “Take a Break Decision-Making Cycle.” It’s fascinating how our minds work when we’re considering stepping back from something. First, there’s often this wave of relief when we just think about taking a break – that’s usually our first clue! But then (and this is where it gets interesting), our brain starts throwing all these reasons at us about why we “can’t possibly” take that break.

Let me share something really powerful I’ve learned: that resistance from our brain? It’s totally normal. Our minds are wired to keep us in our comfort zone, even when that zone isn’t serving us anymore. I’ve broken down exactly how to work through this resistance and trust your instincts when they’re telling you it’s time to pause.

Here are some signs you might need a break:

– Finding yourself dreading things you usually enjoy
– Feeling creatively blocked
– Struggling to keep up with your usual responsibilities
– Experiencing stress just thinking about certain commitments

I really want you to know that taking a break isn’t giving up – it’s giving yourself space to gain clarity and come back stronger. Think about it like the story I share in the episode about the bird in my garage (you’ll have to listen to get that one!).

So What?

Ready to take action? Here’s what I want you to do: Take a moment today to check in with yourself. Where are you feeling overwhelmed? Pick just one commitment that’s causing you stress and give yourself permission to consider a break. Pay attention to how you feel when you think about stepping back – that initial reaction tells you a lot about what you might need right now.

Remember, I’m always here for you through social media @JLthehappygal. I’d love to hear about your experience with taking breaks or any other topics you’d like me to cover in future episodes. While I’m taking my short break, I’ve picked out some fantastic previous episodes that I know will serve you well.

Let’s keep organizing our lives together, one break at a time!
