Ep. 66 - When Things Feel Upside-Down

Ever feel like everything’s out of whack, but you can’t pinpoint why?

In this episode, we’re diving into that upside down feeling of imbalance and how it affects our daily lives.

What does it mean to feel “upside down?” In my years of coaching, I’ve come to recognize it as a sign of imbalance. It’s sneaky, and it can make you think everyone and everything else is the problem. But in most cases, it’s usually just you needing a bit of rebalancing.

Imbalance can feel like a hard problem to solve, but it can actually be as simple as asking yourself two questions: “What do I need?” and “What’s missing?”. And believe it or not, the impact of these questions can be powerful.

For example, recently, my daughter had surgery, and after weeks of being her nurse (not my forte, I’ll admit!), I found myself feeling… off. Nothing sounded fun, and I couldn’t figure out why. Then it hit me – I was out of balance! Because I knew that these two questions would help me feel right side up again, I was able to identify that what was missing was some alone time. Two hours wandering around Target later, and I felt like myself again!

But it’s not just about recognizing the problem – it’s about taking action. I’ve seen this work wonders with my clients too. One of my clients was recently feeling overwhelmed with summer activities for her kids. When she asked herself what she needed and what was missing, she realized she needed to let go of some expectations and just enjoy time with her children. The relief was immediate!

Just recognize that balance looks different for everyone. What works for me might not work for you, and that’s okay! The beauty of these questions is that they help you find your personal prescription for feeling better.

So the next time you’re feeling off-kilter, pause and ask yourself: “What do I need right now?” and “What’s been missing from my life lately?”. Be honest with your answers, and then – this is crucial – give yourself permission to follow through.

Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish – it’s necessary. When you’re balanced, everything else falls into place more easily.
